What if your Framer website doesn’t appear on Google?

Once you build a website, the most anticipated aspect is ‘search visibility’. But if your site isn’t showing up on Google, it can be quite frustrating.

Let’s start by confirming the premise. This guide assumes you’ve registered your site with Google Search Console (GSC) and submitted the URL, yet are still facing issues. If you haven’t set up GSC, please complete that process first.

Basic Search Visibility Considerations

  • Not every page is indexed. It’s especially challenging for larger sites to get all pages visible.

  • Solutions may not take effect immediately. It may take a few days for Google to review and update.

Check which pages have issues first

  1. Log into Google Search Console

  2. Click Indexing > Pages from the left menu

  3. Scroll down to see URLs with Not Indexed status and their causes

We’ve outlined common errors and solutions below.

Common Indexing Errors and Solutions

  1. Excluded by noindex tag

자주 발생하는 색인 생성 오류와 해결법을 설명합니다.

Cause

This happens when a noindex tag is set. It's typically inserted during development for privacy and not removed when deployed.

Solution

Wait for a few pages, or if many, ask the Framer community.
This problem often arises without a specific cause.

  1. Blocked due to Unauthorized Request (401)

Cause

The page is blocked from external access due to Framer’s password protection feature.

Solution

Pages protected by a password are excluded from Google’s index. If you later remove the protection, you must manually submit the URL to GSC as Google doesn’t frequently revisit.

  1. Soft 404

Cause

This occurs when a non-existent page returns a 200 OK response. The server acts as though it offers the page, but in reality, it's not valid.
Note: What is a 200 OK response? It’s an HTTP status code indicating, “This is a normal page!”

Solution

This typically happens with custom 404 pages and doesn’t need indexing, so no worries.

  1. Pages with Redirects

Cause

The page is automatically redirected to another URL due to redirect settings. Google does not index the original page when this occurs.

Solution

Check and remove unnecessary rules in the Site Settings of the Framer project.

  1. Duplicate, Google Chose Another Canonical

Cause

If the content on two pages is similar, Google might index only one, designating another URL as canonical.

Solution

If you want both pages indexed, modify their content to be unique. Otherwise, delete one, no index it, or adjust the canonical tag to point one to the other.

  1. Discovered - Currently Not Indexed

Cause

Google is aware of the page but hasn’t crawled it yet.

Solution

If it affects only a few pages, wait a few days. If many, write to the Framer community for support.

  1. Crawled - Currently Not Indexed

Cause

Google has crawled the page but paused indexing due to content quality issues, lack of internal links, or algorithm-related reasons.

Solution

If only a few pages are affected, wait, or if many, contact the Framer community. This issue often lacks a specific cause.

  1. Manual Penalty

Cause

The site has received a manual penalty for violating Google's webmaster guidelines.

Solution

Remove or disavow spam content or poor-quality links, then submit a reconsideration request through Google Search Console. The index may be broadly removed, so prompt action is required.

In Conclusion

The reasons why Framer-built sites aren’t indexed by Google can vary significantly. However, most cases fall into one of the discussed categories, and by addressing them step by step, they can likely be resolved.

If the issue persists, reach out to Framer customer support or the community.
